My pregnancy
I’m 36 weeks pregnant this week. Now I’m feeling quite nervous as I don’t know when my baby girl will come out. My gynae has said that it is better if baby comes out at least after 38 weeks when her lungs are better developed. My due date is 12/13 Aug and I wonder if my girl will come out any earlier? I hope it is not too unexpected when I’m still working!
This pregnancy has not been easy for me. Though i do not have any morning sickness, I had chickenpox when I’m 9 weeks pregnant. I remembered that time, Eng Guan was away on training outfield and I stayed over at my mother’s place. My colleague Alan gave Peifen and I a lift back home then to SengKang.. I wonder if I have contracted the chickenpox virus there? I went feverish one day and there are blister-like spots on my body.. I didn’t think much about it then until more of the spots come out.. on the 2nd day when spots appeared, Eng Guan accompanied me to meet dr. Anna for my 1st appointment on 9 Jan 08. I had arranged that to confirm my pregnancy. Before that I already tested positive using 3 pregnancy kits and that was on 31 Dec 07. But it wasn’t a good experience for my 1st appointment. When Dr. Anna saw the blisters on my body, she confirmed that it was chickenpox and she was pretty paranoid and said that I shouldn’t be in her office as other pregnant ladies will be coming in too. She was afraid that my virus will infect them and it might be dangerous for them. She didn’t give me any scan and didn’t confirm my pregnancy. She gave me 15 days hospitalization leave and asked me to go back to her 2 weeks later when my chickenpox has recovered.. I remembered that I wept in her office as she briefly describe how chickenpox will affect my baby in the 1st trimester that I’m in. I spent 3 weeks at home to recover from chickenpox and was only taking paracetamol when I had fever.. it was a difficult period and I was pretty depressed then becos I was worried that the virus will affect the baby and also I was looking very ugly with the scars on my face. I remembered when I went back to work, I still had scars and it was not until months later that the scars faded.. My 2nd Chinese New Year after marriage was spent at home without any visiting as I had chickenpox then. Eng Guan contracted the virus from me after 2 weeks I had the virus.. But fortunately he told some anti-viral medicine and his spots were very small and minimal. But he too spent his Chinese New Year with me at home.
That time, we had the support and help from my parents and mother-in-law. My parents bought food and rice for us to cook while my mother-in-law bought us Chinese New Year dinner on New Year’s eve.
After the Chickenpox incident, my pregnancy seems quite easy as I didn’t have any morning sickness and my appetite was normal like my pre-pregnancy days.. @17 weeks, I already felt the movements of my baby and @18 weeks scan I found out about her gender.
Perhaps, I’m not very cautious about my sugar intake and after a breakfast of 2 pcs of raisin bread + horlick + 4 pcs of cookies, my new gynae Prof. Mary Rauff said that my urine test detected high glucose @27 weeks. I then went for the Glucose tolerance test and i failed at the borderline margin. Since 29 weeks, I undergone glucose monitoring and controlled my diet.. No more chocolates, ice-creams, cakes and sweet pastries and my diet was pretty sugarfree and high fibre.. I’m really surprised what pregnancy can affect my glucose handling as true enough, whenever I had too much white rice or carbo, my glucose reading will exceed 7. So I tried to eat less to keep it at a range from 5.5 to 6.6 mmol. But I still missed all the sweet stuffs I used to have.. and I asked Eng Guan to remember to bring me to eat Jap. food, ice-cream and waffles when I recovered from my gestational diabetes.
Today, I cut my hair short to prepare for my delivery and confinement.. since during confinement period, I’m not supposed to wash my hair and there may be hair loss after delivery.. I hope it will not be too bad for me..
